Mercado de Teguise
Every Sunday morning, the historic town of Teguise transforms into one of the Canary Islands' largest and most popular markets. This bustling mercado attracts both tourists and locals, creating a lively atmosphere full of color, music, and authentic island culture.
The market sprawls through the town's charming streets and plazas, with hundreds of stalls selling everything from handmade crafts and jewelry to local food products, clothing, leather goods, and souvenirs. You'll find traditional Canarian products like aloe vera cosmetics, local wines, cheeses, mojos (traditional sauces), and artisan textiles.
Live music performances, including traditional timple (Canarian guitar) players and folk dancers, add to the festive atmosphere. Various food stalls offer local delicacies like papas arrugadas, empanadas, fresh fruit juices, and traditional sweets.
Beyond shopping, the market provides an opportunity to explore Teguise itself, the island's former capital. The town features beautiful historic architecture, including the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, several museums, and charming squares with café terraces perfect for people-watching.
The market operates from approximately 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM every Sunday. Arrive early (before 10:00 AM) for easier parking and less crowded stalls. Bring cash as many vendors don't accept cards. Don't miss trying local food and bargaining is generally expected and accepted.
