Jardín de Cactus
Jardín de Cactus is César Manrique's final architectural masterpiece in Lanzarote, featuring over 4,500 cacti representing 450 different species from five continents. The garden occupies a former quarry, transforming an industrial site into a beautiful sustainable attraction.
The amphitheater design creates different viewing perspectives as you descend through terraced levels. The volcanic rock walls provide dramatic backdrop for the varied cactus forms, from tiny specimens to towering giants. The diversity of shapes, sizes, and even flowering colors creates visual interest throughout.
At the entrance stands a restored traditional windmill (molino) housing a café and shop. A giant metallic cactus sculpture by Manrique marks the site from the main road. The garden demonstrates sustainable landscape architecture, requiring minimal water and maintenance.
Informative plaques identify species and their origins. The garden is particularly beautiful in late winter and spring when many cacti bloom. The late afternoon sun creates dramatic shadows and highlights the sculptural qualities of the plants.
Allow 45 minutes to 1 hour for your visit. The café offers refreshments with garden views. Combine with visiting the prickly pear cactus plantations of Guatiza village nearby. The garden is wheelchair accessible throughout.
