La Geria is Lanzarote's wine region, featuring one of the world's most unusual vineyard landscapes. Vines are planted in individual hollows carved into volcanic ash (picón), protected by semicircular stone walls (zocos) that shield them from wind and capture moisture.

The volcanic cultivation method was developed after the 18th-century eruptions buried the region in ash. Farmers discovered that volcanic ash retains nighttime moisture and radiates heat, creating ideal conditions for grape growing despite minimal rainfall. The technique is now recognized as an ingenious example of agricultural adaptation.

Multiple bodegas (wineries) offer tours and tastings, with Malvasía being the signature white wine. The unique terroir imparts distinctive mineral characteristics. Bodegas range from small family operations to larger commercial facilities, each offering different experiences.

The landscape itself is spectacular, with thousands of dark crescent-shaped walls creating abstract patterns across the black volcanic ash fields. The contrast between the geometric human patterns and the wild volcanic mountains creates unforgettable vistas.

Most bodegas require reservations for tours. Tastings typically include 3-5 wines with explanations. Designated drivers necessary. The El Grifo wine museum provides historical context. Visit multiple bodegas for comparison. Best in late afternoon for photography.
